Martin Thulin: Jan 1
Martin Thulin: Jan 1
Martin Thulin was together with Mikael Scherdin one of the founders of Beeoff and what would become nonTVTVstation later on. Together with Beeoff he often elaborated large and complicated installation which mixed analogue and digital technology. Most analogue, and he experimented a lot with video feedback and simple video effects. Working on his own he has been more experimenting with sound and if he added visuals it was quiet simple experiments in black and white. Jan 1 wasn’t different from that. He placed a black and white camera at the stairs in the Splintermind studio, took care of the patterns he could find in the building and let the light from the outside create the changes in the image as it changed over day. If no one walked the stairs the piece changed very slowly.
Thulin has always been very close to the classics. In his music you will easy find the reminiscence of the concepts of Cage and his visuals own heavily to and of the pioneers of video art but also to the films of Andy Warhol, such as Sleep and Empire State Building.
